The exhibition presents a selection of posters from the Vienna Festival and its most influential campaigns. Some of these posters subtly reflect the spirit of the times, whilst others immediately evoke memories for the city’s residents: of unforgettable theatre scandals, heated debates – and, above all, of great artistic experiences. Controversial events in the city’s social life, such as the occupation of the Arena in 1976, are echoed alongside iconic moments, such as the Falco opening concert in 1985. The poster chronicle illustrates the changing times and design languages, but above all the festival’s own evolution towards its current form and visual identity. As part of the exhibition, the entire collection of the Festwochen poster archive is also being made digitally accessible for the first time: graphic experiments, visionary design drafts and legendary humorous campaigns.
