Richard Prinz exposes the visual world of consumer society with great irony, wit and insight. Since the 1970s, the New York-based artist has been exploring the visual codes and fictions of everyday American culture, examining the mechanisms of authorship, originality and media representation. He rose to fame with his legendary series Cowboys: Marlboro advertisements, ‘re-photographed’ with cropped frames differing from the originals, become a critical reflection on myths, masculinity and the media. The Albertina is dedicating a major exhibition to Prinz, showcasing works from the 1970s to the present day. The focus is on photography, Prinz’s primary medium. On display are iconic series such as Fashion, Gangs and Cowboys, as well as works rarely or never before shown – ranging from his groundbreaking rephotographs of advertisements to autobiographically tinged images from rural New York State, and complex collages made from found material. To this day, Prince continues to approach the theme of appropriation from ever-changing perspectives, with interconnections and interactions form the core of the exhibition: situated at the intersection of photography, painting and sculpture, the show uses around 150 works to demonstrate how thoroughly Prince’s oeuvre is imbued with photographic thinking. Often minimally edited, his images have a dual effect: analytical and seductive at the same time.
