As one of Austria’s best-known authors, Thomas Bernhard continues to divide opinion to this day. Since 2023, his estate has been held at the Austrian National Library. The exhibition presents manuscripts, letters and photographs from all stages of his life, as well as previously unseen artefacts. A particular focus is on Bernhard’s influence on contemporary international literature. Is his style really as easy to imitate as is sometimes claimed? The exhibition explores our relationship with nature, the body and the institutions that shape us. Curated by Bernhard Fetz and Katharina Manojlovic, this special exhibition at the Literature Museum focuses on a body of work of global literary significance.
