The exhibition “Ungebautes Graz” in the Graz Museum deals with unrealised architecture for Graz in its socio-political context. Plans such as the Scheiner department store on Jakominiplatz (1929/30), the Gartenstadt Marienwiese (1947), the Trigonmuseum in the Pfauengarten (1988-93) or the Kunsthaus im Schloßberg (1997) are exemplary for the ongoing debate in Graz about the compatibility of modern building culture with the preservation of the historic old town. Modernity or tradition?
The discussion on this topic has shaped Graz’s urban history of the 20th century and the built architecture has shaped the urban space of Graz to this day.
