Simplification, standardization and systematization – these principles can be seen quite clearly in Heimo Zobernig’s work. Established rules are just as important to him as the appropriation of industrial norms and widespread patterns, such as that of the TV test pattern. Since the beginning of his artistic practice in the early 1980s, the artist has developed an extensive body of painterly work, always based on an attempt to explore color like a “scientist”. Central to Zobernig’s cross-media art, alongside sculpture, film, performance and design, is painting.
This is the second time that the Mumok is showing a comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s work; the first took place in 2002/2003. This exhibition was curated by Karola Kraus.
