The aim of the Vienna Design Week is to convey content easily, as well as to maintain the professional discourse. Creation and production processes are often revealed experimentally and directly on site. The festival works specifically to connect local potential internationally, which is also reflected in the program.
The festival will start in 2021 with a new director: Gabriel Roland will take over this position from the (co-)founder of VDW, Lilli Hollein, who will start her new position as General Director of MAK in autumn. The Vienna Design Week 2021 was conceived by both Roland and Hollein in collaboration.
“A city full of design” is also the motto this fall – Brigittenau, the 20th district of Vienna, is the festival district this year. The festival headquarters is thus also located in the 20th district. Urban work, a focus in the program of the Vienna Design Week is dedicated to the topic of social design, here socio-cultural design solutions are sought. Three projects were selected in 2021. Great site project of the Vienna Design Week is the in-house app, which lets you collect points with a “Wanderpass” and further brings the program to the fore by means of augmented reality. Design should be brought closer to as many people as possible, that is the central concern of the Vienna Design Week.
The host country this year is the EU. Because the European project is a design task.
Many of the challenges facing the EU can be viewed and addressed from a design perspective. Topics such as sustainability, digitalization, the creation of inclusive identities, the promotion of interdisciplinary as well as cross-border cooperation and the establishment of participatory processes are not only core tasks of the EU, but also fields of activity for many designers.
