The Berlin media artist Hito Steyerl is considered a well-founded analyst of our digital image-controlled world.
In the context of the exhibition “Hito Steyerl – Animal Spirits”, curated by Katrin Bucher Trantow for the Kunsthaus Graz, Steyerl explores the question of what one might actually understand by a habitat, a “garden” or a sphere today.
Hito Steyerl’s works are pointed analyzes of the high-tech society. As a profound connoisseur of digital space and artificial intelligence, the Documenta and multiple Biennale participant develops multi-layered interlocking installations that identify the image as a place of world perception in multiple, sometimes interactive narratives.
The artist follows the “reality enhanced by technology” and deals with global flows of finance and goods, working conditions and power structures in a way that is both critical and subversive. She plays with the manipulative power of the visual and practices institutional criticism that goes far beyond the museum.
