The Croatian artist Sanja Iveković is considered one of the most important representatives of her country’s feminist avant-garde. Since the 1970s, she has taken a markedly feminist and activist position in her work and has persistently dealt with gender issues and political issues.
The starting point of her works are often very personal places and living conditions, which she confronts with official historiography and established images in order to explore depictions of female identity, the history of femininity, violence against women, the forms of expression of ideology in mainstream media and the relationship between history and to explore contemporaneity. The exhibition in the Kunsthalle Wien, curated by Zdenka Badovinac, shows works from the most diverse phases of Sanja Iveković’s work. A special focus of the exhibition is Iveković’s artistic reappraisal of the biography of her mother, Nera Šafarić, who was known for her anti-fascist resistance.
