Is there a “right to useful unemployment”? The Austrian-American philosopher and cultural critic Ivan Illich once raised this question and thus also played a major role in driving the debate about a universal basic income in the age of automation and digitization.
In the group exhibition “Einstweilen wird es Mittag” in the Kunsthalle Wien, the curatorial team Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović explores this question and, with the selected artistic works for the exhibition, addresses the central role that the understanding of the term work plays in all ideological camps.
The exhibition is rooted in the past and present of Vienna and deals with the central question from a specifically Viennese perspective.
