Using collage and montage techniques that interweave analogue material and digital images, Daniela Zeilinger creates pictures that reveal themselves as complex layers and question the preconditions of photographic and painted representation. At the points where analogue and digital photography, painting and drawing meet, the artist refers to the simple dot as a starting motif and the highest concentration of formal expression in the “Polka Dots” exhibition. Whether as a “grain” in analogue photography or as a “pixel” in digital photography: The dot represents the formally smallest imaging unit and is consequently regarded by her as a kind of primal principle in the production of imagery.
