The interwar years in Austria were turbulent. Poverty, anarchy and uprisings characterized the period.
In February 1934, there was civil war on Austria’s streets. Armed clashes between units of the gendarmerie, the police, the army and the Heimwehr on the one side and the “Republikanischer Schutzbund” on the other claimed several hundred lives.
The events of 1934 form a central moment on the path from the proclamation of the Republic in 1918 to the end of Austria’s state existence through the invasion of German troops in 1938.
With an exhibition in the Court Gallery, the Museum of History is making an important contribution to raising awareness of this central moment in Styrian contemporary history. The exhibition is based, among other things, on the museum’s own photographic holdings.
