The changing nature of work, the care crisis, the gender pay gap and the part-time trap. Buzzwords like these show how highly topical issues relating to the organisation, distribution and remuneration of work are today. Who does what work and how this work is remunerated is linked not least to gender relations. Care work is seen as a predominantly female resource that is socially utilised. What is the history of these issues? And what actually is ‘work’?
The Blaschka photo archive becomes the starting point for the exhibition to reflect on the relationship between paid, precarious and unpaid labour in the lives of women between 1950 and 1966. Not only the social ‘view’ of female labour is examined. The exhibition aims to encourage a new discussion of the ‘value’ of different, socially necessary forms of labour and to give women in Styria a stage whose story has rarely been told.
