The exhibition in Gleisdorf is based on two events: firstly, it marks the 20th anniversary of Gerhard Lojen’s death, and secondly, this year would have been his 90th birthday. Werner Fenz, long-time director of the KIÖR and the Neue Galerie in Graz, once described Gerhard Lojen as the ‘Dojen of abstract art in Styria’. ‘Ever since Lojen began painting, he has painted abstractly, non-representational, but not formless; ever since he began painting, the surface has not only been a carrier of the image, but a constituent element of the image; the colours are directly involved in the formation of the image.’
