Translating self-determination, strength and a positive image of women into vivid pictorial metaphors characterises Margit Palme’s artistic work. She has been using aquatint etching for more than six decades. Dynamic and sometimes provocative, Palme’s female protagonists strive to master their lives with skill and vigour in a world with patriarchal structures. In the various thematic focuses of the exhibition, the women talk about their activities, wishes and desires. In recent years, the artist has increasingly focussed on the addictions, compulsions and fears that challenge many people today. The artist’s cutting-edge oeuvre has recently attracted particular attention in international art circles. It is therefore more important than ever to discuss the special significance of Margit Palme’s aquatints for Austrian art with a focus on women.
