The Vienna Shorts International Film Festival is more than just a cinema event; it is a cultural phenomenon that brings together filmmakers, enthusiasts and critics.
The presentation of short films and the exchange of ideas about them take centre stage. The festival is organised by the Independent Cinema Association and shows around 300 productions under 30 minutes. Vienna Shorts is also a qualifying festival for the Academy Awards® (Oscars), the European Film Awards (EFA), the British BAFTA Awards and the Austrian Film Prize.
This year’s main thematic focus is on longing as an inner driving force. As in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s early short film Talking Heads (1980), the question will be explored in depth: “What do you want most from life?” And what inner movement is set in motion by these desires, this longing? Where can longing take us – both as individuals and as a society? It is about the longing for belonging, attachment, autonomy, the desire for (political) security or change, about basic emotional needs between inspiration and ideal.
The boundary-crossing filmmaker and provocative genre auteur Yann Gonzalez (FR) will be honoured with a portrait, as will the celebrated and uncompromising artist Jyoti Mistry (ZA), who already won the Austrian Short Film Award at the festival in 2020 for the co-production Cause of Death.
As a third portrait, two shorter works by Amos Gitai (IL) will be shown in cooperation with the Austrian Film Museum as part of the major Gitai retrospective.
“We can hardly wait to immerse ourselves in these cinematic explorations through six curated programmes and together with our wonderful guests,” say festival directors Doris Bauer and Daniel Hadenius-Ebner.
