Johann Strauss was a superstar of his time. In the field of dance music, he created a further development into sophisticated concert music. To mark the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss Sohn, exhibits from his written estate, including the original score to the operetta Die Fledermaus, are being shown for the first time in conjunction with original artefacts from performances of his stage works, creating a fascinating combination of the artist’s musical creations and their realisation on stage. In addition, theatre-historical and political contexts are illustrated. The exhibition sheds light on Johann Strauss’ extremely gruelling life, his relationships with his parents and brothers, the so-called “company”, his three wives and his love adventures in Russia. In addition to his dance and march music, the exhibition also focuses on his ‘Waltz for the World’ An der schönen blauen Donau and his stage works, in particular Die Fledermaus.
