‘In my dreams I hear the sea’ deals with the artist’s longing to be close to the ocean. Angelika Wienerroither was born and raised in Austria – yet she feels a deep connection to the sea. She tries to explore this connection through surfing and sailing: In spring 2024, she sailed the passage from Tromsø, northern Norway, to Spitsbergen. It felt like an expedition to the end of the world; she was on the Valiente for eight days. There was nothing but the ocean and the ship. The crew sailed under a night sky that never got dark and had to fight their way through ice to reach the harbour of Longyearbyen. Wienerroither now paints this experience from memory, not based on photographs or notes. Memories change over time and remain fluid. She uses egg tempera and canvas, but her paintings are not framed; they always remain in the before, in the not-yet-happened. They remain fluid, not fixed.
