International, contemporary, high-profile, virulent, avant-garde, discursive, political: the annual Sommerszene festival is the artistic ‘centrepiece’ of SZENE Salzburg. For almost two weeks, major names and new discoveries from all over the world present their latest dance and performance works at unusual venues in the city. The programme presents significant artistic positions whose projects reflect our reality in different aesthetics. In particular, the festival concentrates on projects from the field of performing arts: dance, theatre and performance are the focal points. In addition, the summer scene – in the spirit of a contemporary, interdisciplinary understanding of art – also presents projects from other fields such as installations, films and concerts. In addition to high-calibre guest performances, the Sommerszene cooperates closely with local groups who develop site-specific works for the festival and thus increasingly turn the public space into a performance venue. With this programmatic orientation, the Sommerszene has been a fixture in the European festival calendar since the 1980s and enjoys an international reputation thanks to its avant-garde focus.
The 2025 edition of the festival presents twelve national and international productions that will be shown at six different venues in Salzburg. One of the central projects of this year’s festival is ‘Evanescent’, an installation by the Australian artist collective Ateliers Sisu, which will be shown in the inner courtyard of the Residenz zu Salzburg. Architect Zara Pasfield and designer Renzo B. Larriviere present their sculpture, which consists of colour-reflecting foil spheres that react to changing light conditions. Inspired by the ethereal beauty and magic of soap bubbles, the walk-in artwork appeals to our universal playfulness and childlike wonder to see the world around us as a space of transience and fragility. The brilliant piece ‘more than naked’ by acclaimed Austrian choreographer Doris Uhlich, whose highly dynamic piece will provide an energetic finale, is a dance highlight. ‘Sommerszene 2025 will once again make the city vibrate with virtuoso dance, international guest performances and a fascinating installation on the pulse of time,’ says Angela Glechner, Director of Sommerszene.
