Modernity is not easy to pin down in terms of time, because today there is a consensus that there is not just ‘the’ one modernity, but that there are several modernities – although it is not clear when they begin, when they end and what their specific characteristics are.
Modernism is characterised by many political, social, technical and ideological upheavals, which find their expression not least in the buildings of the respective period. In terms of architectural history, modernism begins with Art Nouveau, which for the first time abandons centuries-old decorations, before the Neues Bauen completely dispenses with decorative forms. The exhibition examines what exactly modern architecture means in Salzburg on the basis of 25 individual case studies. It is the result of a student project organised by the Department of Art History at the University of Salzburg. The selection of buildings is intended to be exemplary. It is intended to show a cross-section of the variety of building tasks and formal possibilities, and to explain the respective contexts in which they were created.
