The Swedish artist’s work is a visual narrative in the form of collages, text and prints. Influenced by film, snapshot photography and surrealist painting, Åberg’s collages combine everyday realism with a dream-like state of mind. They resemble film stills or cinematic sequences, overlaid with intersecting narratives. As source material, she uses old issues of the Swedish magazine ‘SE’, which was an important photojournalistic publication from 1938 to 1981. The issues used by Åberg, most of which date from the late 1950s, reflect a different era in which the articles and photos were almost exclusively in black and white. This deliberate detachment from today’s world opens up space for her own reinterpretations. Instead of referring to current culture, Åberg chooses images from another time and uses them as raw material for new narratives. Emotional connections to specific fragments guide her process as she explores the compositional potential of each image.
