To mark the 50th anniversary of Fritz Wotruba’s death, the Belvedere 21 is presenting a comprehensive exhibition – curated by Verena Gamper and Gabriele Stöger-Spevak – of the important Austrian sculptor. While Wotruba’s work has so far mainly been examined monographically or with a view to his influence on subsequent generations, this presentation focuses on his international exhibition activities, his network and the broad reception of his sculptures. Selected historical encounters with his work will be used to illuminate the context that makes Wotruba’s specific sculptural language and its associated relevance for art after 1945 visible. In a spatial staging by the next ENTERprise Architects, the exhibition provides a new perspective on Fritz Wotruba, who represents an important voice in the international discourse on the image of man in post-war modernism.
