In 1905, the Hagen Society donated a collection of over 800 drawings to the ALBERTINA. In fact, the Vienna Artists’ Society is considered an important precursor organisation of the Secession and the Hagenbund. Between 1880 and 1900, the members met regularly in their regular pubs Zum blauen Freihaus and Café Sperl. Hundreds of drawings and watercolours by artists such as Josef Engelhardt, Adolf Böhm, Rudolf Bacher, Johann Victor Krämer and others were created there in a convivial atmosphere. For the first time, the ALBERTINA Museum is presenting portraits and caricatures of the members, grotesques, everyday Viennese characters, dreamscapes and drawings from this donation that already point to the Secession. Some of these sheets were later published in the art magazine Ver Sacrum. The exhibition is intended as a contribution to the study of Viennese Modernism.
