At the centre of Brigitte Kowanz’s work is the question: ‘What is light?’ Her answer is: ‘Light is what you see’ – a guiding principle that refers to the paradox that light makes everything visible, but normally remains invisible itself. The retrospective of the same name at the Albertina takes us through the work of this important artist since the 1980s.
Light, which is characterised by transience, boundlessness and immateriality, plays a leading role in this exhibition. In specially created mirrored rooms, the works of light art are reflected to infinity or only emphasised through the use of black light.
In addition, the iconic works Morse Alphabet and E-Mail 02.08.1984 03.08.1984 are shown, which anticipate today’s current themes of digitalisation, virtualisation and the information society.
