In 2025, the Bregenz Festival will bear the signature of the new artistic director Lilli Paasikivi. The first production in the Festspielhaus under her direction will be the monumental ‘Tragédie lyrique’ Œdipe by George Enescu. The opera, which premiered in 1936, will open this year’s festival.
With three exciting music theatre productions on the Werkstattbühne (including a world premiere), the opera studio production, a world premiere and a co-production among the guest performances of the Burgtheater – the first summer visit of the famous Viennese ensemble in the recent history of the Festival -, outstanding orchestral concerts, fascinating chamber music and exciting events as part of the Youth Festival, the Bregenz Festival offers a rich and varied programme for five summer weeks. Once again, Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz will be performed on the lake stage.
The extraordinary production by German director Philipp Stölzl was a great success with audiences last summer. Stölzl not only directs, but also designed the stage set and lighting. The production is set in a spooky, poetic world that extends into the auditorium by the lake. It is a gloomy winter landscape with crooked houses, some of which are half submerged in the swamp, bare trees and skeletal horses.
