The Wien Museum is dedicating a comprehensive mid-career survey to Vienna-based artist Leopold Kessler – the largest exhibition of his work in Austria to date. With his precise interventions in urban infrastructure – always with a critical eye on the use and privatisation of public spaces – Kessler has been internationally present for two decades. His subtle, often unauthorised interventions in public spaces are as famous as they are notorious. His interactive machines, which often masquerade as urban furniture, also repeatedly attract attention.
The exhibition Leopold Kessler. Works in Public Space, curated by Vincent Weisl, not only presents his best-known works, but also provides insight into his early sculptural work and the conceptual preparatory work underlying many of his projects.
