It is estimated that between 1938 and 1945, assets worth at least £135 billion (in today’s currency) were stolen from Jews in Europe. In Austria, Jews fled persecution by the Nazis after the Anschluss – the German takeover of Austria in March 1938. Many were robbed of their possessions or forced to sell them. This exhibition examines how descendants of victims of the Nazi era and Nazis deal with a shared past. The Wertheimers’ table, an ordinary object with an extraordinary history, raises difficult questions about memory, responsibility and justice.
