On the last weekend in August, the Austrian Pottery Market takes place in the ceramics town of Gmunden, transforming Rathausplatz and Esplanade into spectacular venues for Austrian and international clay art at the highest level of craftsmanship. Against the beautiful backdrop of the Traunstein massif, Europe’s most interesting ceramists gather on the banks of Lake Traunsee to present their works to an international audience. Around 130 ceramists from 14 countries, including guests from the Benelux countries, will present and sell their work. This gives visitors the unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive impression and overview of the European ceramics scene.
A special crowd-puller for young and old alike is the international hands-on activity ‘Four-handed turning of the magic potter’s wheel’ by ceramic designer and artist Thomas Benirschke. Making clay ‘understandable’, learning to ‘feel and shape’ is fun and easy here.
Accompanying Austria’s largest pottery market, many Gmunden galleries and exhibition spaces are now traditionally dedicated to the works of both up-and-coming and established ceramic artists.
