The combination of science fiction, science, culture and research appeals to a wide audience and attracts hundreds of visitors every year. The interdisciplinary approach of the participating institutions brings new impetus, enables creative synergies and results in an accessible yet stimulating event format. The festival thrives on the diversity of perspectives: different approaches give rise to a multitude of visions of the future, from probable to desirable. From outer space to the human cosmos: this year, the Science Meets Fiction Festival focuses on the unknown worlds that are hidden from us – including cinema evenings, exhibitions and discussion events that explore fears and desires, repressed and unconscious thoughts, and also the foreignness that is located within ourselves. And as always, the fictional narratives are complemented by scientific input on the topic. The common theme of all contributions this year is ‘Inner Space’. The festival opens at the Salzburg Film Culture Centre DAS KINO with INCEPTION, a visually and narratively impressive science fiction thriller about the boundaries between reality and inner experience.
