The Leica Gallerie Salzburg is presenting the first comprehensive retrospective in Austria of the important photographer Fred Stein (1909–1967). Stein is considered one of the great pioneers of street photography and portraiture. With his Leica and an unerring instinct for the “decisive moment”, he created images of timeless precision, social awareness and impressive visual language. Born in Dresden as the son of a rabbi, Fred Stein initially pursued a career in law. In 1933, persecution by the National Socialists forced him into exile in Paris – and led him to photography. What began as a passion became his calling. Together with his wife Liselotte, he documented urban life in Paris: street vendors, passers-by, political movements – everyday scenes, yet full of symbolic power. He moved in circles of exiles such as Gerda Taro, Robert Capa, Bertolt Brecht and Hannah Arendt, developing a style of great formal rigour and political alertness. Following exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt and elsewhere, the Leica Gallerie Salzburg is presenting a large selection of his work from Paris and New York.
