Every October for eleven years now, the Aegean island of Bozcaada has been the venue for the BIFED – Bozcaada International Festival of Ecological Documentary. This year, the festival will once again bring together filmmakers, artists and an enthusiastic audience from all over the world. As always, the focus is on ecology – but this year, the festival is building a bridge to a deeply human concern: under the theme of ‘peace’, it turns its attention to the most pressing issues of our time – war, justice and the hope for active solidarity. The varied programme includes the world premiere of STOFF / Lace Relations by Katharina Weingartner, which sheds light on a little-researched chapter of Vorarlberg’s history and reveals the colonial ties between the regional textile industry and Europe, the southern United States and West Africa. In Scars of Growth, Monika Grassl and Linda Osusky explore the provocative question of whether and to what extent environmentally friendly mining is even realistic. In DIN 18035, Simona Obholzer documents the quiet precision of a standardised process in which nature becomes the standardised playing field of a football pitch: only when layers of earth and sand have been precisely applied and turf rolls have been unrolled and cut to size can the game begin. Another highlight is the photo exhibition reduce – reuse – rethink by Austrian artist Ulrike Köb.
