The work of Austrian artist Iris Andraschek is characterised by her interest in everyday cultural and socio-political motifs. Threatened freedom, dwindling hope, shifting foundations – the world seems to have reached an impasse. This brings back the realm of the mythical, that enigmatic area between time and timelessness. On the one hand, myths are condensations of world models, patriarchal narratives of struggles and conquests, for example, accompanied by robbery, subjugation and rape of women. Matriarchy, on the other hand, is not a myth, although it is often referred to as such, but a possible form of coexistence. On the other hand, the mythical anchors painful experiences and violent changes in the power of storytelling, which ultimately has an unfathomable significance and through which every life, every story, and even animals, plants and ecosystems are given a voice and a role. Iris Andraschek’s art – and her flair for counter-models – is embedded in these questions of ruptures and transformations as well as invisible connections and relationships, both social and ecological.
