The exhibition Society & Economy presents an artistic-curatorial project based on the ‘Workers’ Museum’ of the versatile, left-wing and utopian-minded Otto Neurath (1882–1945). The focus is on the exhibition in the People’s Hall in Vienna City Hall by the Society and Economy Museum from 1927 to 1934. The exhibition model designed for the Volkshalle by Josef Frank is reconstructed here in recycled plastic – a modular, standardised and at the same time handmade structure that serves as a platform for contemporary Viennese, migrant and international artistic positions. Research-based works take up moments from Neurath’s engagement with Isotype and offer current visual analyses of social and economic conditions through architecture, art history, labour and environmental research. Their perspectives unfold in artistic positions ranging from commitments to the social rights of artists to support for war-displaced artists in Vienna to activist practices for climate justice.

The artists: Vasilena Gankovska, Natalia Gurova, Florian Mayr, Mirko Nikolić
