Since February 2022 (Ukraine) and October 2023 (Gaza), the world has been reeling from two armed conflicts that few thought possible. However, there are currently 56 armed conflicts or wars affecting the world – more than ever before. Camouflage is fundamentally an expression of the connection between living beings and their environment. It can also be described as a survival technique. In a military context, weapons and soldiers are protected by camouflage and, from this shelter, operate highly efficiently from behind the scenes. They deceive their opponents or enemies through camouflage. Zechner uses various camouflage fabrics and garments in these works. Like remnants of tragic contexts, discarded, lost and then picked up again, recoded and undefined in their new function, these patterns lose none of their horror, even though they are also a sought-after fashion tool. The Camuflajes project is a committed collaboration between a visual artist and a writer. Over several years, the Graz-based painter Johannes Zechner and the Mexico City-based writer Pedro Serrano have developed a long-distance collaboration that questions a world in which living spaces are misused as theatres of war and the number of drones is of greater interest than the singing of birds.
