At Athens’ disused Ellinikon Airport, Markus Krottendorfer’s ‘Terminal’ explores the ideologies of modernism inherent in 1960s architecture: an unbroken belief in technological development, progress and growth. The icons of what was then still a young globalisation became ‘non-places’, as Marc Augé describes them, and ultimately witnesses to a past that still determines our present. The power plants still in operation in the series ‘Power Plant Stories’ also convey these dichotomies of rationality and fiction, past and present. Krottendorfer’s works are essentially documentary in nature. However, through precise, almost theatrical photographic staging using exclusively analogue means, they also tap into the utopian potential of the places he finds and transform them into illusionistic spaces that are as seductive as they are melancholic.
