On three evenings in November, the Literaturhaus Salzburg will be transformed into a Mecca for crime fiction lovers. At the PENG! crime fiction festival, several authors will present their latest publications in short readings and moderated discussions – with DJ music intros to match each book. The audience is treated to exciting literature in a relaxed atmosphere – books are raffled off in a crime quiz, and drinks and snacks can be brought into the event from the café. The aim of the festival, which features German-speaking and international authors, is to use readings and discussions (as well as sometimes interdisciplinary and cross-genre elements such as film, music and exhibitions) to raise the profile of the ‘dangerously’ lively crime fiction genre, to invite renowned writers as well as debut authors, and to present their new publications, which are well worth reading, to the audience in a culinary and critical manner. This also builds a bridge between younger and older, well-known and lesser-known writers, showing that the boundaries between popular and serious literature have long since blurred – and that good crime novels, stories, etc. also have a fixed place in the programme of a literature house.
