Elmar Trenkwalder’s expansive sculptures are a feast for the eyes. For the immense detail in his large works, the artist draws on a pool of archaic figures, ornate decorations and biomorphic forms. As part of CARLONE CONTEMPORARY, curated by Stella Rollig, Trenkwalder presents the work WVZ 183 in the baroque Carlone Hall of the Oberes Belvedere. Opulence and richness of content are connecting elements between the baroque pictorial programme of the room and the contemporary sculpture. Trenkwalder develops his monumental, often architecturally inspired sculptures based on the medium of drawing. Countless individual parts are shaped, fired and glazed by hand by the artist over a long period of time and finally assembled into a whole. Similar to Baroque art, sensory illusion and a wealth of information are Trenkwalder’s artistic strategies for captivating viewers with his works.
