The exhibition presented at the Kunsthalle comprises over 100 works, including paintings, collages, sculptures and videos, which form nine different groups of works from the last twenty years. It is the first institutional exhibition of Hawkins’ works in over a decade, and the first in Austria. Over the past three decades, Hawkins has developed a unique practice based on the pleasure of viewing and the dynamics of desire. He uses collages as a means of structuring and developing his compositions and describes his work as “promiscuously referential”: In his works, which deal with themes from the history of artistic representation in sculpture, painting, literature and the performing arts, among other things, he freely quotes from popular culture. The exhibition focuses on works created between 2011 and 2025, many of which are being shown in an institutional context for the first time.
