European and American imagery merge in Christy Astuy’s paintings to form a private iconography that, with its numerous quotations and allusions, not only offers a remarkable wealth of art-historical associations, but also dares to question the relationship between form and content in a highly unorthodox way. After many years of intensive study, her obvious interest in the old masters has not only been reflected in technical knowledge directly related to the craft of painting. The artist has also opened up a seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of motifs, which she has used to develop her own distinctive personal style. For Astuy, an American, the masterpieces of Western art history represent a formal fund that she can use in a more free and unbiased way than her colleagues who were born and socialised in the West. Santissima now brings together works, mainly from recent years, that approach religious subjects in Astuy’s specific way.
