The exhibition, which is an artistic research project by Ana Dana Beroš, Ana Jeinić, Ana Opalić, Federica Pessotto, Lucia Rebolino and others, presents photographs by Croatian photographer Ana Opalić and large ‘books’ with waterproof nautical charts (Portolani). The photographs show movement patterns of familiar and novel beings and objects – from people, machines and ships to introduced algae – in this particular marine space. The portolani – each covering a section of the northern Adriatic coast – serve both as a research archive and as alternative navigation instruments, offering a novel cartography of the infrastructural marine landscape of the northern Adriatic. As part of Komuna Maro, they have been and continue to be exhibited in various port cities along the Adriatic coast. Each portolano combines maps, photos and texts developed by the project team on the basis of extensive research and numerous interviews. Voices from the fields of political science and international economics, maritime logistics, marine biology and activism – together with the life experiences of workers from various maritime industries – merge into a polyphonic narrative that reveals the intertwined forces that shape this maritime region.
