How does religion actually feature in contemporary art? For 25 years, this question has been a leitmotif in the search for contemporary art at KULTUM. Over the last 15 years, hundreds of exhibitions have resulted in a collection that is unique in Europe in its persistence in asking this question. In ten sections, the exhibition curated by Johannes Rauchenberger explores a gap in current museum practice that cannot be filled: a museum for God. Its codes, its ‘iconography,’ the contradictions in its images, the (blind) faith of its witnesses, the plight of contemporary fundamentalism, the dream of uniting knowledge and belief, and the poetics of coming to terms with ‘last things’ unfold in a wide variety of works on three floors. The attic of the old monastery is also included. Each of the works tells its own exhibition story, its concept, its esprit. With all this, this first show builds a ‘meta-narrative’ about different aspects of religion in contemporary art, which from now on can be experienced as a ‘permanent collection’ at KULTUM.
