Friedl Kubelka has made a name for herself internationally with her conceptual photographs and experimental short films – as a filmmaker since 2009 under the name Friedl vom Gröller. However, it is little known that she has also been drawing and painting since the beginning of her artistic career around 1970. She has produced more than 100 drawings and gouaches, which have rarely been seen in public until now. These small-format, fantastically realistic works on paper are among the artist’s most personal: intimate, rich in detail and surprisingly colourful, they tell of life, death, love, lust, jealousy, isolation, joy and exuberance in all their combinations. Kubelka / vom Gröller relentlessly depicts the individual and their emotional world in all the media she uses, but the immediacy of drawing and painting allows her to achieve an unusually intimate, direct and also vulnerable form of expression. A selection of the works on paper will be shown in this exhibition with a few minutes of film.
