Alexander Kluge has been working as a filmmaker since 1960. The retrospective shows six programmes from the New German Cinema era, produced before 1988, and seven more recent programmes. The structure of the exhibitions has a visible influence on the new films. It is based on the principle of constellation, i.e. the connection between images. This can take the form of film collections lasting up to ten hours, as in the production Nachrichten aus der ideologischen Antike (News from Ideological Antiquity, 2008), which takes up Eisenstein’s unrealised project of filming Karl Marx’s Capital with the means of our time. Constellation is also the intertwining of text, image, music and science (mathematics). These are completely different fields, but each has its own perspective. Together, they allow for diversity, which is basically simple. The ‘narrator reality’ communicates in constellations all the time, and we humans, in our emotions, in our public spheres and in our intellectual orientation, respond with similar diversity. Alexander Kluge’s latest feature-length film is therefore called Primitive Diversity (2025).
