The exhibition at the Kunsthalle presents new and recent paintings and sculptures made from cut paper by Italian artist Guglielmo Castelli. Castelli, who trained in theatre set design, has developed a distinctive iconography based on the history of painting, architecture and literature. His nocturnal, dreamlike canvases are full of psychological drama. These new works feature figures floating in space, falling from furniture or through the air. Traces of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and his painting The Hunters in the Snow (1565) or patchwork façades reminiscent of Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s architecture lend these narratively dense compositions a Viennese accent. A series of works on canvas and panel is presented on an eighteen-metre-long wall surface inspired by the story of Hansel and Gretel. They are accompanied by small sculptures, preparatory materials and sketchbooks, which are displayed in showcases.
