After more than twenty years, Susanne Wenger’s work returns to Graz with the exhibition Àdùnní Olórìṣà. In collaboration with the commendable Susanne Wenger Foundation in Krems, HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark presents a carefully curated selection of the artist’s multifaceted oeuvre. In addition to impressive batik works, selected paintings and drawings are also on display. Particularly noteworthy are her early coloured pencil drawings Traumgesichte (Dream Visions), created in Vienna in 1943/44 during the war. These visual worlds, populated by oversized insects and a monstrous hare, oscillate between dream and nightmare and reflect an inner struggle with fear, powerlessness and psychological distress. However, the focus of the exhibition, curated by Sandro Droschl, is on Wenger’s large-format textile works – colourful batiks that combine myths of creation, death, sacrifice and rebirth. In addition to the impressive presentation of the textile works, paintings from later years are also on display.
