In DRAW DREAM DRAMA DRIFT, Austrian artist Christian Schwarzwald presents both key series of works from earlier creative phases and a number of new pieces created especially for his exhibition in Suzhou. These new works are the result of an intensive examination of the art of traditional Chinese Kunqu opera. Schwarzwald was particularly inspired by its rhythms, coded body movements and delicate aesthetic structures, and transferred these elements into his own pictorial system of drawing. In this way, gestural drawing, performative memory and cultural translation enter into a multi-layered dialogue. Concepts such as ‘visual language’ and ‘interdisciplinary dialogue’ form the guiding motifs of the exhibition, which sees itself as an open space of resonance between Western contemporary drawing and East Asian theatre aesthetics. The exhibition is presented at the Ni Art Museum Suzhou.
