Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, a leading Austrian painter of the Biedermeier period, set himself the task of painting ‘the nature that surrounds us, our times, our customs’ and polarised critics with his lifelike portraits, genre paintings and landscapes. As a backdrop, independent motif and expression of the connection between humans and nature, landscape played a decisive role in his work and accompanied him until the end of his life. The exhibition, curated by Arnika Groenewald-Schmidt, traces Waldmüller’s engagement with the landscape in the Vienna Prater, the Salzkammergut, Italy and the Vienna Woods. Selected works by European greats such as John Constable, Johann Christian Dahl and Théodore Rousseau provide impetus to view Waldmüller in the context of his time.
