The SIOLENCE exhibition in Tequisquiapan highlights the oppressive silence surrounding violence against women. Instead of visible traces or loud gestures, it deliberately stages silence – the silence into which victims retreat because violence remains a social taboo. And the silence that allows perpetrators to act with impunity. Initiated by Soroptimist Petra Werkovits (Calliope. Join the Dots.), the exhibition uses images, text and sound to show women who are speaking publicly about their experiences of violence for the first time. The images were created with great sensitivity by various female photographers and make the invisible visible: fear, pain, powerlessness – but also courage and self-determination. SIOLENCE is not a silent exhibition. It is a powerful appeal to look and listen. The exhibition is accompanied by lectures, workshops and a discussion with local actors and the project team of the partner organisation ‘Mujeres Valientes’.
