Helene Thümmel presents two newly created series of works under the exhibition title Mandate. In the first series, the artist focuses her attention on the unelected and largely uncontrollable fusion of corporate and governmental powers. Using naive pattern creations made with linoleum stamps, she approaches the complex issues of democracy and its institutions, questioning the reach of state authority with a wink. The starting point for a series of embroidery works was the poem ‘Die Lösung’ (The Solution) by Bertolt Brecht, who wrote ‘that the people have forfeited the confidence of the government. […] Wouldn’t it be easier for the government to dissolve the people and elect another?’ The artist deals with the tension between voters and their representatives and addresses the question of which words count and are reported in the media.
