Christina Messnik, a multidisciplinary artist based in Vienna, is implementing a participatory project with Roma women in collaboration with the Instituto Romanó para asuntos sociales y culturales. Messnik sees encouraging Roma women to use public spaces in their cities and to take ownership of them as part of the project in Barcelona as a form of self-empowerment that should be promoted. The project consists of a three-day programme of workshops on poetry, photography and performance at various locations throughout the city, giving space to the women’s multilingualism (Catalan, Romani and Caló). The works of Polish Roma singer-songwriter Bronisława Wajs (Papusza) serve as inspiration and a starting point for artistic reflection. The workshops are documented by photographer Beatriz Jiménez and published together with the poems written by the participants by the Spanish Instituto Romanó and the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of Vienna.
