Dietmar Brehm is considered one of the most influential figures in the Upper Austrian art scene. With the exhibition Point and Echo, the Linz Castle Museum is dedicating a comprehensive solo exhibition to Brehm. Curated by Gabriele Spindler, the show focuses on paintings and graphic art from recent years, and also features a selection from Brehm’s extensive film work. Dietmar Brehm’s art is characterised by an unmistakable visual language, often featuring just a few striking motifs on canvas or paper. Despite recognisable forms and minimalist compositions, his images are never easy to decipher. Since the 1970s, Dietmar Brehm has been regarded internationally as a leading representative of avant-garde film. His cinematic work is characterised by an intense exploration of human perception and is marked by techniques such as deliberate mis-exposure, strong contrasts, flickering montages and the use of found footage. A selected programme in a black box set up especially for the exhibition provides an insight into Dietmar Brehm’s film work.
